Wondering about a player, a past game or another issue involving the Bears? Senior writer Larry Mayer answers a variety of email questions from fans every day on ChicagoBears.com.

Before Tommie Harris, who was the last Bears player to be ejected from a game?

Hank J.
Bolingbrook, Illinois

When I originally answered this question, I thought that wide receiver Curtis Conway was the last Bears player ejected from a game. But I was incorrect. Center Olin Kreutz and running back Curtis Enis actually were the last Bears players booted from a game. Kreutz and Enis were ejected late in a 48-22 loss at Washington on Oct. 31, 1999 during a scuffle with Redskins defensive end Kenard Lang. Conway was also kicked out of a defeat to the Redskins on Nov. 2, 1997 at Soldier Field. When side judge Don Carey—who’s now a referee by the way—failed to call a seemingly obvious pass interference penalty, Conway charged at the official and appeared to make contact with him. The Bears receiver then slammed his helmet to the ground as he walked to the sideline. Conway drew two 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalties and an ejection from the game. He was eventually fined $10,000 by the NFL and another $10,000 by the Bears.

I know much has been made about Tommie Harris’ lack of production over the last couple years since he made his last Pro Bowl. But I couldn’t help but notice that the Bears played without Tommie in both of their lopsided losses to the Bengals and Cardinals. How much did not having Tommie hurt the defense?

Sean W.
Raleigh, North Carolina

Tommie Harris is an integral part of the Bears defense when he’s playing at a high level, but I seriously doubt that Harris or any other individual would have made much of a difference in the blowout losses to the Bengals and Cardinals. Middle linebacker Hunter Hillenmeyer agreed with that assertion Monday, saying: “He certainly would have made a difference, but he wouldn’t have made a 41-point difference.”

Do you think the Bears will have any interest in Larry Johnson with the injuries at running back to Kevin Jones and now to Garrett Wolfe?

John C.
Hackensack, New Jersey

I don’t see that happening. Larry Johnson is a talented running back. But I’d be very surprised if the Bears considered signing him given the number and type of off-the-field incidents he’s been involved in.
