Chalk Talk

Wondering about a player, a past game or another issue involving the Bears? Senior writer Larry Mayer answers a variety of e-mail questions from fans every day on ChicagoBears.com.

Larry: What jersey numbers will the Bears' draft picks wear this season?

Alex
West Lafayette, Indiana

Alex: The following numbers have been assigned to the Bears’ 2007 draft picks: Greg Olsen (82), Dan Bazuin (79), Garrett Wolfe (25), Michael Okwo (62), Josh Beekman (67), Kevin Payne (44), Corey Graham (35), Trumaine McBride (26) and Aaron Brant (70). I’ve received several emails from fans who want to buy jerseys of the rookies—especially Olsen and Wolfe—but here’s a word of caution: rookies often change their uniform numbers after final cuts, so I would be careful and maybe wait until that point before investing in a jersey.

Larry: It’s time to grade the 2004 draft as you mentioned in your last “Chalk Talk,” so how did the Bears do?

Jonathan M.

Jonathan: I’d give the Bears an A- for their 2004 draft. Three of their four top picks have made a major impact in defensive tackle Tommie Harris, wide receiver Bernard Berrian and cornerback Nathan Vasher. Harris is a two-time Pro Bowler who has emerged as one of the top players at his position in the NFL, Berrian enjoyed a breakout season last year and Vasher is a Pro Bowler who has lived up to his nickname, “The Interceptor.”

Larry: Which rookies did the Bears sign as undrafted free agents following the draft and has an undrafted free agent ever made the team and started?

David K.
Fort Wayne, Indiana

David: The Bears have signed seven undrafted rookie free agents: quarterback Chris Leak, wide receivers David Ball, Drisan James and Jayson Swain, defensive end Chris Frome, safety Jay Staggs and linebacker Danny Verdun Wheeler. None of the 15 undrafted free agents the Bears signed last year made the 53-man roster. The last undrafted rookie free agent to start a game for the Bears was safety Brandon McGowan in 2005. Two current Bears starters entered the NFL as undrafted free agents with other teams: Defensive end Adewale Ogunleye (Dolphins) and fullback Jason McKie (Eagles).
