Chalk Talk

Wondering about a player, a past game or another issue involving the Bears? Senior writer Larry Mayer answers a variety of e-mail questions from fans every day on ChicagoBears.com.

Larry: How has Rex Grossman looked in OTA workouts?

Michael P.
Rio Vista, California

Michael: Rex Grossman has looked very sharp the past few weeks in OTA practices. I thought Tuesday was one of his best days. He threw the ball with accuracy and authority and made good decisions. He especially impressed me in leading the offense to a touchdown against the first-team defense in a two-minute drill. Showing poise and leadership, he hit Muhsin Muhammad over the middle and tight end Greg Olsen along the sideline. Grossman then looked off the safety and rifled a pass down the right sideline and into the back of the end zone, hitting Muhammad in stride for a touchdown.

Larry: You mentioned that Kyle Orton has impressed coaches this offseason in a previous “Chalk Talk.” Any chance that Orton will challenge Brian Griese for the No. 2 spot?

Adam
Indianapolis, Indiana

Adam: I don’t see that happening. The Bears remain committed to Brian Griese as Rex Grossman’s backup. But with injuries so prevalent in the NFL, especially at the quarterback position, it’s a tremendous luxury to have a third-stringer like Kyle Orton who is continuing to develop and is capable of stepping onto the field and leading your team to victory.

Larry: If I remember correctly, Tank Johnson served a one- or two-game suspension from the Bears last season. Do these games count toward his suspension from the league?

Tim
Bettendorf, Iowa

Tim: The one-game suspension that Tank Johnson received from the Bears last season for conduct detrimental to the team is totally unrelated to the suspension that was levied by the NFL for violating the league's personal conduct policy.
