Wondering about a player, a past game or another issue involving the Bears? Senior writer Larry Mayer answers a variety of e-mail questions from fans every day on ChicagoBears.com.

Larry: Why did Hardy Nickerson really resign as Bears linebackers coach?

Paul K.
Dubuque, Iowa

Paul: My understanding is that Hardy Nickerson resigned so he could help his family deal with medical issues involving both his mother and mother-in-law. I’m told that it was a very difficult decision for him because he enjoyed working for Lovie Smith, whom Nickerson has referred to as a mentor. The coaches and players I’ve spoken to enjoyed working with Hardy and wish him and his family the best of luck.

Larry: It’s interesting that the Bears play so many away games in domes next season (in Minnesota, Atlanta, Houston, Indianapolis, St. Louis and Detroit). What is the Bears’ overall record in domed stadiums?

Gary F.

Gary: That’s an interesting catch on your part. The Bears are assured of playing only two outdoor road games next season in Green Bay and Carolina, though there are retractable roofs in Houston and Indianapolis, where the Lucas Oil Stadium will replace the RCA Dome in 2008. The Bears are 35-47 all-time in domed stadiums, including 5-5 in four seasons under Lovie Smith. They went 0-2 in 2004 (losing in Detroit and Minnesota), 1-1 in 2005 (winning in Detroit and losing in Minnesota), 4-0 in 2006 (winning in Arizona, Detroit, Minnesota and St. Louis) and 0-2 in 2007 (losing in Detroit and Minnesota). The Bears’ all-time records in the indoor stadiums they will visit in 2008 are as follows: 10-16 at Minnesota’s Metrodome, 2-4 at Detroit’s Ford Field, 2-1 at Atlanta’s Georgia Dome, 2-2 at St. Louis’ Edward Jones Dome and 0-0 at Houston’s Reliant Stadium.

Larry: What do you think the chances are of the Bears trading for Javon Walker or Chad Johnson considering the receivers aren’t happy with their current situations?

Sarmad
Des Plaines, Illinois

Sarmad: The Bears have made key trades in the past to acquire veterans such as defensive end Adewale Ogunleye and special teams standout Brendon Ayanbadejo, so I’m sure they’ll make inquiries if they feel that Javon Walker or Chad Johnson could help them. But I think there’s a much better chance that the Bears will address the wide receiver position in the draft, possibly as early as the first three rounds.
