Wondering about a player, a past game or another issue involving the Bears? Senior writer Larry Mayer answers a variety of e-mail questions from fans every day on ChicagoBears.com.
Larry: With Darren McFadden set to enter the NFL Draft, what is his projected draft spot? If he is available with the 14th pick, would the Bears strongly consider spending another first-round pick on a running back?
Steve S.
Columbus, Ohio
Steve: Many experts rank Arkansas running back Darren McFadden as the No. 1 prospect in the draft and project that he will be selected no later than third overall. For him to slip all the way to 14th, he would probably have to do something pretty bad to cause his stock to tumble so far. In other words, the only way I see McFadden wearing a Bears uniform is if he dresses up as Devin Hester for Halloween.
Larry: Is there any chance the Bears will try to acquire quarterback Chris Simms from the Buccaneers? He’s young, has showed promise and can probably be had for a late-round draft pick.
Mike C.
Tulsa, Oklahoma
Mike: Chris Simms is an intriguing possibility. Of course, his health is the biggest issue. He hasn’t played in nearly two years after suffering a season-ending (and life-threatening) injury in September 2006 when he ruptured his spleen during a game. But he apparently is feeling much better and plans on playing in 2008. I’m sure the Bears will explore all options during the offseason and Simms could be one of the players they investigate in their quest to help stabilize the quarterback position.
Larry: It seemed like the Bears played a lot of tough teams in 2007. How did their strength of schedule rank in the NFL?
Paul B.
Bolingbrook, Illinois
Paul: The Bears tied with the Lions for the third most difficult strength of schedule in 2007. Bears opponents compiled a .543 winning percentage (139-117). All five of the Bears’ non-division losses came to teams that made the playoffs with winning records (San Diego, Dallas, Seattle, the New York Giants and Washington). The only two squads that had a more difficult schedule than the Bears were the Eagles (144-112, .563) and Redskins (142-114, .555).
