Chalk Talk

Wondering about a player, a past game or another issue involving the Bears? Senior writer Larry Mayer answers a variety of email questions from fans every day on ChicagoBears.com.

I read in yesterday’s “Chalk Talk” that the last touchdown the Bears scored off a fake field goal came in 2002 when Brad Maynard connected with Dustin Lyman. Didn’t Brian Urlacher score on a fake field goal against the Redskins more recently than that?

Patrick K.
Hobart, Indiana

It’s hard to believe because it doesn’t seem like it was that long ago, but the play you’re referring to actually occurred on Dec. 23, 2001. Brian Urlacher caught a game-winning 27-yard touchdown pass from holder Brad Maynard off a fake field goal in a 20-15 road victory over the Washington Redskins.

Since Brandon Marshall wants out of Denver and his previous quarterback is now in Chicago in Jay Cutler, what are the chances of the Bears acquiring him?

Gene L.
Alma, Michigan

I certainly wouldn’t hold your breath. First of all, Brandon Marshall is a very talented player, and the Broncos aren’t going to give him away. Secondly, Marshall has some major character issues that would have to be thoroughly investigated before any consideration is even given to discussing a potential deal. Personally, I’d be very surprised to ever see Marshall in a Bears uniform.

I know it’s early, but if you had to make a prediction now, who do think will be the 11 players who start on opening day for the Bears defense?

William S.
Freeport, Illinois

You’re right, it is early, especially given that the Bears are still several weeks away from reporting to training camp and they haven’t worn pads since last December. But I’ll make my predictions anyway. Here’s the defensive starting lineup I think you might see Sept. 13 when the Bears open the season at Green Bay: Alex Brown and Adewale Ogunleye at defensive end, Tommie Harris and Anthony Adams at defensive tackle, Brian Urlacher, Lance Briggs and Pisa Tinoisamoa at linebacker, Charles Tillman and Nate Vasher at cornerback, and Kevin Payne and Craig Steltz at safety. The one prediction that’s a toss-up to me is at free safety, where Corey Graham very easily could start ahead of Steltz.
