Wondering about a player, a past game or another issue involving the Bears? Senior writer Larry Mayer answers a variety of email questions from fans every day on ChicagoBears.com.

The TV angle sure looked like Jay Cutler might have had a good shot at running for a touchdown on the last play against the 49ers if he mixed in a few pump fakes to freeze the defense. What do you think?

I watched the play you’re referring to from the Bears sideline, and my first thought was that Jay Cutler could have possibly ran the ball into the end zone. But in hindsight, it appeared that way only because there weren’t any 49ers defenders immediately in front of him. After seeing the play on tape, it’s evident that linebacker Manny Lawson is right next to Cutler when he released the ball and would have easily been able to tackle the quarterback had he opted to run. Defensive tackle Ray McDonald also would have been in position to make the stop.

I’ve never heard an explanation for why the Bears drew a delay of game penalty on Robbie Gould’s field goal attempt late in the first half against the 49ers. What happened in that situation?

Peter K.
Orlando, Florida

It appeared to me that it was the officials and not the Bears who were at fault on that play. One of the officials stood over the ball waiting for the 49ers defense to get aligned while the play clock was running. When the official finally got out of the way, there were only about seven seconds left on the play clock. The Bears got aligned, and Patrick Mannelly snapped the ball an instant after the play clock expired.

I was disappointed to see Dick Jauron get fired by the Bills today. What was Jauron’s record as Bears head coach, and how does that compare to Lovie Smith’s?

Rick P.
Wheeling, Illinois

Dick Jauron was 35-46 (.432) in five seasons as Bears coach, including 0-1 in the playoffs. Lovie Smith is 51-42 in six seasons (.548), including 2-2 in the post-season.
