What did you think of Brian Urlacher criticizing teammate Jay Cutler on Yahoo Sports? What was Urlacher thinking when he made those comments?
Alan L.
Cedar Rapids, Iowa
I really don’t think that Brian Urlacher was criticizing Jay Cutler at all. In his comments to Michael Silver on Yahoo Sports, I think Urlacher was simply lamenting the fact that the Bears are no longer a team that is winning with a power running game and a dominant defense. That has absolutely nothing to do with Cutler. For those of you who missed it, here’s what Urlacher said: “Look, I love Jay, and I understand he’s a great player who can take us a long way, and I still have faith in him. But I hate the way our identity has changed. We used to establish the run and wear teams down and try not to make mistakes, and we’d rely on our defense to keep us in the game and make big plays to put us in position to win. Kyle Orton might not be the flashiest quarterback, but the guy is a winner, and that formula worked for us. I hate to say it, but that’s the truth.” Again, I don’t think Urlacher was criticizing Cutler. Obviously, Cutler has nothing to do with the Bears ranking dead last in the NFL in rushing or the defense getting torched in three of the last six games, and I think that’s what Urlacher is frustrated and upset about.
With Orlando Pace hurting a bit, do you think that the Bears will move Chris Williams back over to left tackle, the position he was going to play before Pace was signed?
David S.
Indiana
It may not happen this week, but I’m pretty sure the Bears will eventually move Chris Williams back to left tackle. I think it makes more sense to do it after he gets at least a few weeks of practice reps there. Regardless, he should be able to make a smooth transition given that he started all 24 games at left tackle as a junior and senior and Vanderbilt and continued to work at that position upon joining the Bears.
Why did the Bears add a tight end to their practice squad when they already have depth at that position? I think it would make more sense to concentrate on adding an offensive lineman since the line continues to struggle to open holes for the running backs and protect Jay Cutler.
Christopher Q.
The Bears signed tight end Kevin Brock last week primarily because tight ends Desmond Clark (neck) and Kellen Davis (ankle) were either sidelined or limited in practice due to injuries. It's really all about having enough healthy bodies for practice given that the new player isn't going to be active on game day.
