LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The Bears will have all nine of their 2007 draft picks on the field Friday when they open training camp with a 3 p.m. practice at Olivet Nazarene University.

Rookie defensive end Dan Bazuin, the team’s lone remaining unsigned pick, agreed to a four-year contract Wednesday, one day before the reigning NFC champions head to Bourbonnais.

Dan Bazuin was selected by the Bears with the 62nd overall pick in the draft.
“It feels great,” Bazuin said. “Being able to get it done before training camp and before everything really starts to happen is really great for me and the organization.

“This is just another step in fulfilling a dream of mine to have a contract with an NFL team, especially the Bears organization. It’s a dream come true and I can’t wait to get out there and start training camp.”

Bazuin will line up at a deep position that includes veterans Adewale Ogunleye and Alex Brown and second-year pro Mark Anderson, a fifth-round pick who set a team rookie record with 12 sacks in 2006.

“The competition is going to be huge,” Bazuin said. “But I think it’s an opportunity to learn from those three guys who have been in the league and are great players.”

The Bears selected Bazuin in the second round of the draft (62nd overall). A productive four-year starter at Central Michigan, the 6-3, 260-pounder plays with an abundance of energy and effort.

Last season as a senior, Bazuin registered 15 tackles for loss, 10½ sacks, four forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries, one of which he returned 32 yards for a touchdown at Toledo. In January, he was named Defensive MVP of the East-West Shrine Game after recording 2½ sacks.

“That initially gets your attention, having that many sacks, that many tackles for loss,” coach Lovie Smith said during the offseason. “Then you meet him and he’s a good athlete. All of those things made us like him.”

Bazuin was sidelined for much of the Bears’ offseason program after injuring his knee during the rookie minicamp in early May. But he returned for the final two weeks of OTA workouts in June and has been cleared to participate in training camp.

“I’d say I’m 95 percent,” he said Wednesday. “I’ll have no problems doing anything in practice. I’m going to continue to rehab it, but for the most part there’s nothing to be worried about.”
