LAKE FOREST, Ill. – For Bears defensive tackle Anthony Adams, home is where the heart is.

The Detroit native returned to the Motor City last Sunday to help raise awareness about heart disease by appearing at a pre-Mother’s Day luncheon benefiting the American Heart Association.

Bears defensive tackle Anthony Adams (far right) was joined by (from left) Jerome Bettis, Gladys Bettis and Adams' mother, Connie Davis, last Sunday in Detroit.
Adams was joined by his mother, Connie Davis, as well as former NFL running back and fellow Detroit native Jerome Bettis and his mother, Gladys Bettis, who suffers from heart disease.

The cause hits close to home for Adams, whose grandmother, Shirley Myrick, had triple-bypass surgery a few years ago when Anthony played for the San Francisco 49ers.

“Seeing her in the hospital, that wasn’t a good thing,” Adams said. “You never want to see your loved ones in the hospital, especially after heart surgery.

“It was a pretty rough time for us, but she made it through and I was glad to give the people of Detroit some awareness about what happens to the heart. You can feel like you’re completely healthy, but if you don’t get those checkups, it can happen to anybody.”

Former University of Miami star Russell Maryland, a Chicago native, will be honored. Miami head coach Randy Shannon and several of his assistants are slated to be on hand.

Summer camp: Bears tight end Desmond Clark will host a free football camp June 20 in Lakeland, Fla., in conjunction with his 88 Ways Youth Foundation.

The sixth annual camp, which will be held from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at Clark’s alma mater, Kathleen High School, is open to boys and girls ages 6-15 of all ability levels. The staff includes current and former pro players and coaches who will teach the fundamentals of offense, defense and special teams.

King of the hill: Congratulations to Bears fan Jacob Vick for winning the 2009 ChicagoBears.com Draft Challenge. Vick tallied 98 points to win the grand prize, a 42-inch widescreen LCD HD television.

Vick answered 17 of 19 questions correctly. He accurately predicted the first five players selected, the first player chosen at nine of 10 positions, the college that had the most prospects drafted (USC) and even the NFL team that would be the first to trade down (Cleveland Browns).

First place winners Scott Minty and Jeremy Snowball won authentic Bears helmets autographed by top pick Jarron Gilbert; and second place finishers Barbi Manriquez, Robert Marvin, Zachary Berg, Amanda Davis and Eric Pagnucci won official Reebok draft day hats.
