LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Bears defensive backs Charles Tillman
and Danieal Manning
showed their ball skills and big-play ability in Sunday’s 30-6 win over the Cleveland Browns at Soldier Field.

“We’ve been waiting for a day like that from Danieal, who’s probably the best athlete on the team,” said coach Lovie Smith. “And Charles Tillman … those guys really stood out.”
Tillman’s touchdown was his fourth in seven NFL seasons, and first at Soldier Field. He had previously scored on interception returns of 22 yards at Detroit on Oct. 30, 2005 and 26 yards at Detroit on Oct. 5, 2008 and on a 40-yard fumble return at Arizona on Oct. 16, 2006.
Manning’s interception came on a Derek Anderson pass that was intended for Massaquoi.
“I was just reading the quarterback, knowing what route those guys will run with a two-receiver set to one side, and just using my ability and trusting my instincts,” Manning said.
Manning revealed that the secondary was inspired by defensive backs coach Jon Hoke, a first-year assistant who played for the Bears in 1980.
“Coach Hoke, earlier in the week during defensive meetings, had posted a note on the board about the history of Chicago Bears football and how it started,” Manning said. “He talked about the ‘C’ on our helmet and what it represents, and it really hit home. It let us know what we are representing.”
On the ground: Running back Matt Forte had his second most productive game of the season, rushing for 90 yards on 26 carries with a long run of 12 yards. His only better outing was a 121-yard effort Oct. 4 against the Lions.
The second-year pro scored two touchdowns—on runs of 1 and 10 yards—for the third time in his career. Forte also scored twice last season on two runs in St. Louis and on a rush and a reception in Detroit.
“You still look to pop that long run, but I was glad that we went out there and could put points on the board and we could move the ball running the ball a little bit,” Forte said.
Block party: Israel Idonije blocked Phil Dawson’s extra point attempt in the third quarter. The 6-6, 270-pounder has now blocked three field goals and two extra points in six seasons with the Bears. The Bears have blocked 17 kicks since 2004, the most in the NFL during that span.
News and notes: Reserve safety Craig Steltz exited in the second half after hurting his arm on special teams, but his injury is not believed to be serious. … The Bears scored first for just the second time this year. They outscored the Browns 6-0 in the first quarter after being outscored 45-7 in the opening period in their first six games this season. … Devin Hester had a game-high seven receptions for 81 yards. His 21 catches in the last three games are the second most in the NFL in that span, trailing only the Arizona Cardinals’ Larry Fitzgerald, who has 25.
