Red-zone struggles continue to plague Bears in loss

CHICAGO – The red zone continued to be a dead zone for the Bears offense Sunday night.

The struggling unit produced just one touchdown on three trips inside-the-20 in a 24-20 loss to the Eagles, twice settling for Robbie Gould 28-yard field goals after stalling at Philadelphia’s 10-yard line.

Jay Cutler completed 24 of 43 passes for 171 yards with 1 TD, 1 interception and a 63.2 passer rating in Sunday night's 24-20 loss to the Eagles.
“We had our chances, especially early, and we didn’t make the plays,” said tight end Greg Olsen. “It’s very hard to overcome that and not get those touchdown, especially in the first half. That caught up to us.”

Trailing 10-3 early in the second quarter, rookie Kahlil Bell dashed 72 yards to the Philadelphia 10 on his first NFL carry. But the Eagles held Jason McKie to a one-yard gain on a reception in the flat and dropped Matt Forte for a one-yard loss. On third-and-goal from the 10, Jay Cutler’s pass into double coverage intended for Olsen fell incomplete.

Down 10-6 late in the first half, Forte was stopped for no gain on first down from the Philadelphia 15. After a five-yard completion to Olsen, Cutler failed to connect with Devin Hester over the middle on third-and-five.

After scoring eight touchdowns on 11 trips inside-the-20 (72.7 percent) during a three-game winning streak early in the season, the Bears have mustered just six TDs on 19 red-zone possessions (31.6 percent) in losing five of six games.

“We’re not scoring enough points,” Cutler said. “We’re not helping out the defense, so we’ve got to get better.”

Charles in charge: Cornerback Charles Tillman forced a career-high three fumbles in Sunday night’s loss, increasing his season total to six, most in the NFL.

The seventh-year pro punched the ball out of receiver DeSean Jackson’s hands after a five-yard reception in the second quarter, and Anthony Adams recovered at the Chicago 33. Tillman victimized Jackson again on a three-yard catch late in the third quarter, but the ball dribbled out of bounds.

Tillman later generated another turnover when he stripped rookie running back LeSean McCoy after a 17-yard run, and Hunter Hillenmeyer recovered the fumble at the Philadelphia 37.

Since joining the Bears in 2003 as a second-round draft pick, Tillman has forced 21 fumbles, the most by an NFL defensive back during that span.

Another pick: Zackary Bowman intercepted a Donovan McNabb slant pass intended for Jackson in the second quarter, giving the Bears cornerback a pick in three straight games.

The last Bears player to intercept passes in three consecutive games was Brian Urlacher, who accomplished the feat in the final three weeks of the 2007 season.

Bowman leads the Bears with four interceptions, and now has five picks in 11 career games.

Sack man: Tommie Harris dropped McNabb for a 10-yard loss in the second quarter, giving the Bears defensive tackle a sack in two straight games.

Sunday night’s sack came on third-and-four at the Chicago 44, forcing the Eagles to punt after they had produced a field goal and a touchdown on their first two possessions of the game.

In the end zone: Subbing for the injured Desmond Clark (neck) as the No. 2 tight end, Kellen Davis scored the Bears' only touchdown on a 15-yard pass from Cutler late in the third quarter. Davis has now scored three touchdowns on nine receptions this season.

Grounded to a halt: Forte rushed for 34 yards on 14 carries. Since gaining a season-high 121 yards Oct. 4 against the Lions, the second-year back has averaged 41 yards on 14 attempts in six games.

Flag day: The Bears were again plagued by costly penalties. On Philadelphia’s first touchdown drive, the Eagles would have had to punt after Mark Anderson tackled McNabb a yard short of a first down on a third-down scramble. But Israel Idonije drew a 15-yard penalty for pulling McNabb’s facemask.

Davis, center Olin Kreutz and fullback Jason McKie all drew holding penalties in a six-minute span in the second quarter. Corey Graham’s penalty for an illegal block above the waist on a Devin Hester punt return cost the Bears 14 yards of field position at the start of their final drive.
