LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The Bears on Tuesday released veteran running back Kevin Jones.

Kevin Jones

Jones joined the Bears in 2008 and rushed for 109 yards on 34 carries in 11 games. He then re-signed during the offseason after being promised an expanded role to complement starter Matt Forte. But Jones was lost for the season when he tore ligaments in his left ankle in the preseason finale.

Jones arrived in Chicago after spending his first four NFL seasons with the Detroit Lions. In 64 career games, he has rushed for 3,176 yards and 24 touchdowns on 795 carries and caught 143 passes for 1,011 yards and three TDs.

Jones became expendable when the Bears signed free-agent running back Chester Taylor last Friday. On Tuesday, offensive coordinator Mike Martz told ChicagoBears.com that Taylor and incumbent Matt Forte would share the workload in the backfield.

“We have two starters,” Martz said. “That’s how we look at it.”
