MIAMI – The magnitude of the game is obviously much different, but Rex Grossman’s approach to operating the offense won’t change Sunday when the Bears face the Colts in Super Bowl XLI.
“We definitely need to get deep into our game plan,” Grossman said. “We need to get some first downs and start to mix it up and avoid three-and-outs as much as possible.”

“I want to have a high completion percentage and just be patient because I know our style of defense is to not give up the big play and I’m sure that’s the same philosophy that the Colts have,” Grossman said.
“So just be patient. When your opportunity comes, make the best of it. But if you have to check it down 20 times in a row, do that. Don’t get bored out there and start to try to make something happen (when it’s not there).”
Given all the hype for Super Bowl XLI, Grossman has received his share of unsolicited advice. But the fourth-year more is listening primary to his coaches.
“You get a lot of advice in these situations and really I’ve tried to lean on coach (Ron) Turner and (quarterbacks coach) Wade Wilson as much as possible because they know our offense. They know what I’m going through and they know me as a player.
“What they’ve pretty much told me is to be decisive, read and react, and have fun, and that’s as far as I need to take it. There’s so much hoopla and there are so many people willing to give advice.
I just need to really focus on what my coaches are asking me to do and go out and execute that.”
Family support: The Bears quarterback isn’t the only Grossman who’s been speaking to reporters this week. Rex’s father, Dan, has also been interviewed during Super Bowl week.
“I’m surprised he’s doing any, but I think he’s proud of me and wants to express that,” Grossman said. “He’s been great. Both my parents and my wife have been great.
“They’re on the field with me. They live and die with it. They go to every single game. They’re emotionally invested in everything. They’ve experienced some really great highs and some bad lows, (but) in the end it’s been great.”
Health update: Bears reserve linebacker Rod Wilson (hamstring) did not practice Friday and was added to the injury report for Super Bowl XLI as questionable.
The Colts added defensive end Robert Mathis (back) and cornerback Jason David (abdomen) to their injury list as probable. Cornerback Nick Harper (ankle), linebacker Keith O’Neil (rib) and safety Bob Sanders (knee) remained questionable.
David, Harper and Mathis did not practice Friday.
Father figure: Bernard Berrian credits fellow receiver Muhsin Muhammad with helping him through a difficult time in his career. “He’s great,” Berrian said. “He’s been that father figure. I always call him “Big Daddy” on the team because he’s so old and I always make fun of him about that.
“What he brings to the game and the knowledge that he brings to the game is helpful. His first year here was my second year in Chicago and dealing with not playing a lot is where he helped me most. He always told me to patient and to not get frustrated with the things you can’t control. I think that’s the biggest part I took from him.”
