LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The Bears on Monday agreed to terms with quarterback Kyle Orton on a one-year contract extension through the 2009 season.
Orton is expected to compete for the starting job in training camp with Rex Grossman, who agreed to a one-year contract with the Bears on Saturday, six days before he was slated to become an unrestricted free agent.

After a loss at Minnesota, Orton led the Bears to their only back-to-back wins of the season in the final two games.
In a 35-7 rout of the Packers, he completed 9 of 15 passes for 104 yards with 1 TD and a 103.2 passer rating. He then connected on 12 of 27 passes for 190 yards with 2 TDs, 1 interception and a 77.7 passer rating in a 33-25 victory over the Saints.
Orton’s 12-6 career record is the fourth best among Bears starting quarterbacks with at least 16 starts since 1961.
A 2005 fourth-round draft pick, Orton went 10-5 as a surprise rookie starter who was anointed the No. 1 quarterback after Grossman broke his ankle in the preseason and Chad Hutchinson was released.
Operating a scaled-back offense, Orton completed 190 of 368 passes for 1,869 yards with 9 touchdowns, 13 interceptions and a 59.7 passer rating as a rookie. He passed for more than 150 yards only twice and won games in which he threw for just 68 and 67 yards while supported by a strong defense and rushing attack.
Orton is the fourth Bears player to agree to contract terms in the last week, following defensive end Alex Brown last Monday, Grossman Saturday and tight end Desmond Clark Sunday.
