In the first of nine position previews in advance of training camp, offensive coordinator Ron Turner discusses the Bears quarterbacks:

What were your impressions of how Rex Grossman and Kyle Orton performed during offseason workouts?

They both did a great job. They both had an excellent offseason—before we started OTAs, during the OTAs, the minicamps, all that. They were outstanding and mainly because of their focus. Both had great focus.

Did one of them outperform the other even to a small degree, or are they completely even going into training camp?

I’d say it’s even. Both guys are doing a real good job. I’m very pleased with the way both guys are playing.
Kyle Orton started the final three games last season, leading the Bears to back-to-back wins over the Packers and Saints.

How will the competition for the starting job be conducted in training camp?

We’ll continue with what we did during the offseason, which is one guy goes with the ones one day and the other guy goes with the ones the next day. We’ll chart everything and see how many reps they’re getting with the ones, with the twos, in 7-on-7, blitz, two-minute—all the different situations that come up. The good thing about training camp is we’ll have pads on, so now it’s a little bit different once the pads are on and you get going.

What must Rex or Kyle do to win the job?

Just perform consistently and efficiently at a high level. The evaluation will be based on consistency; who’s doing everything most consistently well.

Is it important to choose a starter early or are you OK with the competition going deep into the preseason?

I’m fine with that. As long as both guys continue to stay focused, prepare like they’ve been doing and go out and play well, I’m not too concerned about it. We’ve won with both of them and we can continue to win with both of them.

What must the quarterback position do better than last season?

I don’t want to get into what they have to do better. Offensively, we have to perform better than we did a year ago, not just the quarterback position. Myself, the players at every position—we’ve got to execute our offense. We’ve got to run our offense a lot better than we did last year and take advantage of opportunities as a whole unit.

What impressed you about the way Rex performed during offseason workouts?

The biggest thing with Rex that I’ve seen is his focus. He’s been locked in, really keyed in, doing a great job. He’s consistently done what we’ve asked him to do, and he should with the years he’s had in the system. He needs to go out and play relaxed and stay focused.

What’s the focus with Rex heading into training camp?

Real nothing different. It’s the same thing we’ve been focusing on, which is run the offense. When you have an opportunity to take a shot, take a shot, go after it. But be very efficient with the football.

What impressed you about the way Kyle performed during offseason workouts?

The biggest thing with Kyle is that he’s playing very relaxed. He has the same focus I talked about with Rex, but Kyle’s playing very relaxed and throwing the ball with better accuracy and touch.

How would you assess rookie quarterbacks Caleb Hanie and Nick Hill?

Both of them are doing a good job trying to learn the system and trying to get better every day. Obviously they’ve got a long ways to go. But we’re trying to find out if either one of them can know the system well enough to be a No. 3 for us.

What are their strengths?

Caleb’s No. 1 strength is his arm strength. He’s got a good arm. He’s also got a good football mind. He’s picking things up well. Nick’s strength is his athleticism. Both of them are good leaders.

Do you envision one of the rookies serving as the No. 3 quarterback this season?

It’s too early to tell. Right now I couldn’t say yes, but I couldn’t say no either.
