BOURBONNAIS, Ill. - Bears offensive coordinator Ron Turner spoke to reporters Wednesday about the quarterback competition, rookie running back Matt Forte's progress, rookie left tackle Chris Williams and much more:

How have Rex Grossman and Kyle Orton performed so far in training camp?

Both of them are competing extremely hard. It’s good, healthy competition. They’re both very focused, studying hard, preparing hard, working hard and with both of them I see a sense of urgency and a seriousness and a really good focus, yet they’re relaxed.

How has having Rex and Kyle alternating with the first unit every day affected the timing on offense?

Still in its early stages, the competition between Kyle Orton and Rex Grossman is too close to handicap.
I'm sure it does affect the timing a little bit. But they're both throwing to all the receivers that are going to be playing. They're getting work and they're getting timing with that. Obviously at some point we need to settle in and say 'this is the starter' and give him ample time to get the rhythm with the starting backs and line and receivers and everything, and that'll come. But they're both getting plenty of work with everybody.

It seems like a lot of receivers are getting reps with the starting unit depending on the play and the formation. Will that continue into the regular season?

It depends how it unfolds, but I can see a lot of guys getting reps. Obviously we're not going to have eight receivers when the season comes, but the guys we have, I could see all of them being involved, I really can. I don't think it'll be a situation where it's just going to be two guys playing 90 percent of the time or three guys. I think if we have five or six, whatever we have, I can see them all getting a lot of playing time.

You were very impressed with Matt Forte during offseason workouts. How has he performed in training camp?

He’s been exactly what we expected, it's no change. He's going to continue to be a good player. He's very mature for his age, very intelligent, very instinctive, and just kind of even-keeled. He's got a tremendous amount of pride. He does not like to make mistakes. When he does make a mistake, he's not real happy about it. He's got a tremendous focus about him.

How soon does Chris Williams need to get back on the field to have a legitimate chance to compete for the starting left tackle position?

He needs to get back soon. He needed to get back a few days ago. Now, I'm not saying he can't play because he hasn't been here, but that position, offensive line, you've got to get work. Any position you have to get work, you have to get reps, you have to get out there, especially if you're a rookie, but honestly it's true for a veteran. You've got to get the timing, you have to get the feel for it. He's got to get the feel for the speed of the game and everything else, all the adjustments, everything else that comes with it, and the only way you can get it is being out there. He's a great young man, extremely intelligent, he works hard, he studies. Mentally he's going to very well prepared, but he's not getting the physical reps, so obviously he needs to get it, he's got to get it.

Is there a deadline in terms of a date where he has to return to have a chance to be on the field for the opener?

No, we've never even talked about that. Whenever he gets here, he's going to compete and we're going to put the best people on the field that we feel give us the best chance to beat the Colts.

With Devin Hester’s role expanding, do you feel like a kid with a new toy when it comes to devising ways to utilize him?

Right now we're just running the offense. Obviously we'll get into that as the season goes and him being on the field a lot more makes it easier. Last year was extremely difficult. When he went on the field everyone knew he was there and everyone was pointing to him, people in the stands, people on the field, everybody, so it was really hard. He had a very small package. Right now he's on the field and we're just calling it and right now I'm not even looking like Devin's in so let me do this or let me do that. There are certain times we might do that, I'll say put him in or whatever to make sure I see him in the huddle and I'll call something, but for the most part, I'm just calling plays and we're just running our offense and we want him to execute it. The rest of the game-planning and the other stuff will come later.

Does Brandon Lloyd have something to prove?

No question about it. All the stuff that I've heard and that other people have heard, I'm sure he's heard the same things and I think he does have something to prove, probably more so about his character and attitude than football. Everyone knows he's got tremendous ability. I think he's got something to prove that he's a good guy. He wants to prove that he's a good person and can be a team guy, which I believe he can be.

Did the Brandon Lloyd you knew even before he played for you at Illinois matter more to you than the stories you’ve heard about him the past two seasons?

I basically went by what I knew of him as a person, him, his family, all that kind of stuff. Obviously we all heard some stuff. I told Brandon the only thing I'm concerned with is the here and the now; what you’re going to do here and what you do now. The rest of it, I said I've heard stuff, every guy in that locker room has probably heard stuff. The equipment guys have probably talked to other equipment guys and heard stuff. Trainers talk to trainers. Everybody's heard stuff. But you're here, you have a fresh start, none of that matters. I know what kind of person you are and I've got faith in you.

How’s it working out so far with him?

So far it's working out great. He's doing a really good job, he's working hard, working extremely hard, playing well, making some plays for us. Like anybody in camp, he has had some good plays and bad plays. That's training camp, but his attitude's great, studying, working hard, doing a great job, he's going to help us.
