LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The Bears on Saturday reached the NFL’s mandatory 53-man roster limit by terminating the contracts of guard Dan Buenning, cornerback Rod Hood and linebacker Darrell McClover; waiving 16 players including wide receiver Brandon Rideau; and placing three others on injured reserve.

Players who were waived included guard Johan Asiata, defensive ends Ervin Baldwin and Joe Clermond, offensive tackle Cody Balogh, quarterback Brett Basanez, cornerbacks Rudy Burgess, Marcus Hamilton and Woodny Turenne, fullbacks Jason Davis and Will Ta’ufo’ou, linebackers Marcus Freeman, Kevin Malast and Mike Rivera, receiver Eric Peterman, and center Donovan Raiola.

Receiver Brandon Rideau failed to make the Bears' opening day roster for the fourth straight year.
Running back Kevin Jones, who tore ligaments in his left ankle in Thursday night’s preseason finale, was placed on injured reserve, as were safety Dahna Deleston (hamstring) and defensive end Henry Melton (ankle).

Rideau failed to make the Bears’ opening-day roster for the third straight year. He lost out to Rashied Davis and Devin Aromashodu, who join Devin Hester, Earl Bennett and rookies Juaquin Iglesias and Johnny Knox, giving the Bears six wide receivers.

Rideau excelled in training camp, but he had what he described in his own words as “a mediocre preseason” before breaking two tackles on an 18-yard touchdown reception Thursday night against the Browns.

The 6-3, 198-pounder had four receptions for 43 yards and 1 TD in four preseason contests.

Six of the Bears’ nine 2009 draft picks made the final roster with defensive lineman Jarron Gilbert, cornerback D.J. Moore, safety Al Afalava and guard Lance Louis joining Iglesias and Knox. The only two who failed to earn a spot were Freeman and receiver Derek Kinder, who was cut on Tuesday. The other draft pick is Melton, who will spend his rookie season on injured reserve.

In waiving Basanez, the Bears opted to keep two quarterbacks on their final roster in Jay Cutler and Caleb Hanie. In addition, they kept Moore ahead of Hood, who was signed Tuesday but struggled against the run and the pass two days later against the Browns. On the offensive line, Louis earned a spot ahead of Buenning, a five-year veteran.

The Bears also removed cornerback Charles Tillman from the physically unable to perform list, making him eligible to play in next Sunday night’s season opener in Green Bay. Tillman missed all of training camp and all four preseason games while recovering from back surgery.

The Bears can establish an eight-man practice squad on Sunday and also can claim players who’ve been waived by other NFL teams. In past seasons, the Bears have typically stocked their practice squad primarily with players they released a day earlier during final cuts.
