Bears set to battle Bengals today at Paul Brown Stadium

CINCINNATI – The Bears will look to rebound from last Sunday night’s mistake-filled loss in Atlanta today when they battle the resurgent Cincinnati Bengals at Paul Brown Stadium.

Chicago (3-2) is tied with Green Bay (3-2) for second-place in the NFC North, two and a half games behind Minnesota (6-0). The Packers visit Cleveland today, while the Vikings play in Pittsburgh. The surprising Bengals (4-2) are tied with the Steelers (4-2) for first place in the AFC North.

Bears quarterback Jay Cutler has thrown at least two touchdown passes in four straight games.
The Bears self-destructed against the Falcons, failing to capitalize on numerous opportunities. The offense came away with no points on three of four red-zone trips, committing two costly turnovers and turning the ball over on downs late in the game after reaching the 5-yard line.

Jay Cutler passed for 300 yards and 2 touchdowns in Atlanta, but he also was intercepted twice. The Bears quarterback, who signed a two-year contract extension Tuesday, has thrown multiple TD passes in each of his last four games, registering passer ratings of at least 100 in three of those four contests.

Since the start of the second half of the season opener in Green Bay, Cutler has completed 68 percent of his passes (102 of 150) for 1,074 yards with 10 TDs, four interceptions and a 99.7 passer rating. The 10 TD passes are tied for the fifth most in the NFL during that span.

Cutler will be facing a Bengals defense that permitted Texans quarterback Matt Schaub to pass for 392 yards and 4 TDs last Sunday in Houston’s 28-17 win in Cincinnati.

Defensive end Antwan Odom, who has eight of Cincinnati’s 16 sacks this year, was lost for the season when he suffered a ruptured Achilles’ tendon against the Texans.

The Bears are looking for more production from their running game after Matt Forte was limited to 23 yards on 15 yards while also fumbling on back-to-back plays from the Atlanta 1 a week ago. In his previous game, Forte rushed for a season-high 121 yards and 1 TD on 12 carries in a win over the Lions.

Defensively, the Bears will make some changes to their front seven. Defensive tackle Tommie Harris is doubtful with a sore knee, which means that second-year pro Marcus Harrison likely will start next to Anthony Adams. Newly-acquired defensive end Gaines Adams also is expected to make his Bears debut.

With Pisa Tinoisamoa out for the season with a knee injury, the Bears will start their fifth different combination of linebackers in six games. Nick Roach is expected to remain at middle linebacker, while Hunter Hillenmeyer likely will return at the strongside position after missing two games with a rib injury.

The Bears defense will look to rediscover its pass rush today against Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer, a two-time Pro Bowler. After registering multiple sacks in each of their first four games—including a season-high five against the Lions—the Bears were blanked in that category in Atlanta.

The defense also will try to generate more takeaways, especially after dropping a fumble and a would-be interception on back-to-back plays against the Falcons. The Bears have produced just five takeaways this year after compiling at least 10 in their first five games in each of the previous four seasons.

The Bengals’ ground game is led by former Bears running back Cedric Benson, who ranks third in the NFL in rushing with 531 yards and 4 TDs on 127 carries. During a conference call with Chicago media Wednesday, Benson accused the Bears of blackballing him after they released him.

The fourth overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft was waived by Chicago on June 9, 2008 after being arrested twice in five weeks for alcohol-related transgressions. Benson appeared in 35 games with 12 starts in three seasons with the Bears, rushing for 1,593 yards and 10 TDs on 420 carries, a 3.8-yard average.

The Bears defense will also have to contend with entertaining wide receiver Chad Ochocinco, who has caught 29 passes for 455 yards and 3 TDs this season. The five-time Pro Bowler is Cincinnati’s all-time leader in receptions (641) and receiving yards (9,360).

While Ochocinco playfully trash-talked with a handful of Bears veterans on Twitter early in the week, the Bengals receiver praised cornerback Charles Tillman and the rest of Chicago’s defense during a midweek teleconference with the media. He also lauded Cutler and Bears rookie receiver Johnny Knox.
