Will Matt Forte shoulder heavier workload?

Posted Oct 29, 2013

Larry discusses if the Bears will lean more on Matt Forte with Jay Cutler out, who will call plays on defense in place of Lance Briggs and how the Bears can be more consistent.

Wondering about a player, a past game or another issue involving the Bears? Senior writer Larry Mayer answers a variety of email questions from fans on ChicagoBears.com.

With Jay Cutler out, will Matt Forte get more carries?

From Vince on Twitter

Matt Forte no doubt will remain an integral part of the offense as both a rusher and receiver, but I don't think the Bears offense will look any different with Josh McCown under center in terms of the run/pass ratio or play-calling. I know the Bears didn't change anything when McCown replaced an injured Jay Cutler Oct. 20 against the Redskins and McCown will now have an entire week of practice to prepare for Monday night's start in Green Bay. The Bears don't have to limit their offense at all with McCown. He's been with the team since the first day Marc Trestman installed the system in April and is capable of running it without restrictions.

Who will be making defensive calls with Lance Briggs out?

From Luis on Twitter

It's either going to be middle linebacker Jon Bostic or strongside linebacker James Anderson, but no final determination has yet been made. The Bears feel that both are capable of handling play-calling responsibilities. I wouldn't be surprised if Bostic and Anderson get a chance to do it in practice this week before a decision is made heading into Monday night's game at Lambeau Field.

What is it going to take for the Bears to be more consistent week-to-week?

From Kerry W. on Twitter

I know coach Marc Trestman said Monday that he wants the Bears to perform better and more consistently in all three phases and it's not just the defense that must improve. While that's certainly true, if there's one aspect of the game that must get better more than any other it's the pass rush. The Bears rank last in the NFL with 10 sacks in seven games and need to generate more pressure on the quarterback to improve a struggling injury-depleted defense. The Bears have allowed seven touchdown drives of at least 80 yards in their last two games because they've let quarterbacks stand back in the pocket and pick them apart.
