Chalk Talk: How much will starters play Thursday?

Wondering about a player, a past game or another issue involving the Bears? Senior writer Larry Mayer answers a variety of questions from fans on ChicagoBears.com.

How much will Bears starters play in the Hall of Fame Game?

Edward F.

Coal City, Illinois

I wouldn't expect them to play much if at all in Thursday night's Hall of Fame Game in Canton. Coach Matt Nagy addressed the issue Monday at training camp, saying he would finalize those plans in the next day or two while telling reporters: "We're still going through that right now. We have an idea of what we want to do, but we don't know the exact process yet as far as who. We'll get together with the coaches and the staff the next two nights here and hammer that out." Nagy added that injuries are a concern in the preseason, so "that's what you've got to kind of weigh and see is it worth it or not, so we'll go through that."

How has tight end Adam Shaheen performed in training camp to this point?

John G.

Des Plaines, Illinois

Second-year tight end Adam Shaheen has had a strong camp from what I've seen, and his best day at least as a receiver may have been on Monday when he leaped high to snag a couple of touchdown passes from Mitchell Trubisky. Here's what coach Matt Nagy had to say when asked Monday about Shaheen being a red-zone threat: "The kid has a lot of tools. He wins 50-50 balls. He has natural hands. For him it's more of just getting the experience of being able to have confidence in those type of throws. We're going to continue to work on his routes every single day and the intricacies of this offense and what he has to do. When you get in the red zone, you can do some more of that stuff, but you have to have a plan when you're down there. We'll continue to keep working on a plan with him."

I'm a little concerned about the Bears' depth at safety. If Eddie Jackson or Adrian Amos gets hurt, who's the next man up?

Rich J.

Dublin, Ohio

Third-year safety Deon Bush has impressed me in training camp. It seems that the 2016 fourth-round pick from Miami has been making more plays in practice than he has in the past. Granted, Bush still has to gain more game experience, but I'm interested to see how he'll fare in preseason games both on defense and special teams. A lot of players blossom in their third NFL season like safety Adrian Amos did last year and here's hoping the same thing happens with Bush in 2018. Converted corner Deiondre' Hall also would be an option as an injury replacement.
