Chalk Talk: How many new starting QBs are there in NFL?

Wondering about a player, a past game or another issue involving the Bears? Senior writer Larry Mayer answers a variety of questions from fans on ChicagoBears.com.

It seemed like there were a ton of NFL teams that had new Week 1 starting quarterbacks this season. How many did and was it some sort of record?
Bruce T.
Pennsylvania

There were 15 new opening day starting quarterbacks this season compared to Week 1 last year, meaning nearly half of the NFL's 32 teams had a different signal-caller under center. The 15 were Andy Dalton (Bears), Jared Goff (Lions), Jalen Hurts (Eagles), Ryan Fitzpatrick (Washington), Jameis Winston (Saints), Sam Darnold (Panthers), Matthew Stafford (Rams), Mac Jones (Patriots), Tua Tagovailoa (Dolphins), Zach Wilson (Jets), Tyrod Taylor (Texans), Carson Wentz (Colts), Trevor Lawrence (Jaguars), Justin Herbert (Chargers) and Teddy Bridgewater (Broncos). The 15 changes are tied for the second most in NFL history since at least 1950. There were also 15 new quarterbacks in 2018.

Will Khalil Herbert see more playing time since he has shown the ability to play in the NFL?
Butch S.
Elk Grove, Illinois

The Bears are certainly impressed with sixth-round draft pick Khalil Herbert's development. He has especially shown improvement as a kickoff returner and made an immediate impact with a 50-yard return on the opening kickoff of the season last Sunday night in Los Angeles. Herbert is making similar strides on offense. But the Bears are deep at running back with David Montgomery and Damien Williams ahead of him, so Herbert's opportunities on offense likely will remain limited barring an injury to one of the veterans ahead of him.

What happened to Bears defensive tackle Damion Square? I saw him play in the season opener and I no longer see him on the roster. Was he released?
Paul A.
Oak Lawn, Illinois

No, he was not released. Defensive tackle Damion Square was flexed from the Bears practice squad to the active roster and played five snaps against the Rams. He then reverted to the practice squad after the game and was signed shortly thereafter to the Las Vegas Raiders' 53-man roster.
