Chalk Talk

Chalk Talk: Will Chase Daniel play in preseason finale?

Wondering about a player, a past game or another issue involving the Bears? Senior writer Larry Mayer answers a variety of questions from fans on ChicagoBears.com.

I know that Mitchell Trubisky and the starters aren't going to play Thursday night against the Bills, but will backup quarterback Chase Daniel get any reps?

The plan is for third-string quarterback Tyler Bray to play the whole game, but I'm assuming that backup Chase Daniel will be dressed just in case Bray suffers an injury. I'd also be willing to bet that starter Mitchell Trubisky will be in street clothes for the contest. Trubisky was very complimentary when asked about Bray this week, saying: "Tyler has been awesome. It's not easy to be a No. 3 because you're not always getting the reps in practice and sometimes you get more mental reps, you're watching other guys' film. But he's an absolutely pro. And I think we have one of the best quarterback rooms across the league. The way we help each other. The way we compete. The way we push each other. The way Tyler and Chase carry themselves every day, it just really motivates me and Tyler has been in this offense just like Chase. He knows the ins and outs. He can help with the young guys lining up. He's got total command in the huddle."

Are there battles for a starting position that have yet to be decided?

The one that comes to my mind is at left guard where veteran Eric Kush is competing with rookie second-round pick James Daniels for the starting job. Both players have taken reps at guard and center during training camp and the preseason under the guidance of offensive line coach Harry Hiestand. Said coach Matt Nagy: "It's a good battle between those two guys and I have a lot of trust in Harry and what he believes and where he's at. We'll talk together on it as a staff. Harry and I will talk about it and try to make the best decision." Asked to evaluate Daniels' performance in last Saturday's preseason win over the Chiefs, Nagy said: "I thought he played for the most part pretty well. There were one or two plays where he lost his balance a little bit, but for the most part I was happy with where he was, and for him just being able to get that experience, it was a positive for him."

When was the last time the Bears closed the preseason with three straight wins?

Cameron S.

Chicago

The last time that happened was in 2012 when the Bears beat the Redskins 33-31, the Giants 20-17 and the Browns 28-20 after losing their preseason opener to the Broncos 31-3. The Bears finished that regular season 10-6, but did not make the playoffs.
