Wondering about a player, a past game or another issue involving the Bears? Senior writer Larry Mayer answers a variety of email questions from fans on ChicagoBears.com.
I was very impressed with how Jordan Palmer performed in the preseason finale. Why didn't the Bears keep him instead of Josh McCown as their backup or at least put him on the practice squad?
Jordan Palmer did play very well in the preseason finale against the Browns, especially given that he was with the Bears for less than two weeks. But the team is very high on Josh McCown and confident in his ability to step in and perform in the event of an injury to Jay Cutler. The Bears also like McCown's experience; he has played in 50 career games with 33 starts while Palmer has appeared in just four contests with no starts. Palmer was not eligible for the practice squad because he's had at least one accrued season of NFL experience on a 53-man roster. With that being said, I'm sure that the Bears will keep him on speed dial and call him if Cutler suffers any kind of injury.
Which position has had the most turnover on the Bears roster from last year to this year?
Oak Lawn, Illinois
Just looking at the Bears roster after final cuts this year versus last year, the offensive line has had the most turnover. Of the nine linemen on the 53-man roster, only center Roberto Garza was on last year's opening day roster. James Brown and Jonathan Scott joined the active roster last season after Week 1, while Taylor Boggs, Eben Britton, Jermon Bushrod, Kyle Long, Jordan Mills, and Matt Slauson were all added during the offseason. They've replaced Gabe Carimi, Lance Louis, Chilo Rachal, Chris Spencer, J'Marcus Webb, Chris Williams and Edwin Williams.
I can't remember the last time I saw Charles Tillman get a sack, although I'm sure it's happened before. How many sacks does he have in his career?
Hoffman Estates, Illinois
I was thinking the same thing when Charles Tillman sacked Raiders quarterback Matt Flynn in the Bears' preseason win a couple of weeks ago in Oakland. Tillman, who rarely blitzed under the previous coaching regime, has three career sacks. They occurred against the Broncos in 2003, the Packers in 2005 and Green Bay again in 2011. The one I remember most vividly was the one in 2005 when Tillman crushed Brett Favre with a blindside hit at Soldier Field.
