Omar Young enters his second season with the Bears after spending the 2022 season as an offensive quality control coach.
Young enters the 2023 season with 14 years of coaching experience, including four in the National Football League with two additional years of experience on the personnel side.
Most recently in 2022, Young completed his first season with the Bears as an offensive quality control coach, providing insight and analysis for the upcoming defense's various down and distance situations, field positions and on-field analytics.
Prior to his arrival in Chicago, Young spent three seasons at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Ill. as the school's assistant football coach (2019) and running backs & co-special teams coordinator (2020-21).
Prior to his time at EIU, Young was an offensive quality control coach with the Green Bay Packers, a position he held for two years during the 2017-18 seasons, crossing paths with Bears offensive coordinator, Luke Getsy, who was a wide receivers coach during the 2017 season.
Young joined the University of South Carolina football staff in February 2016 as an analyst. Prior to his arrival in Columbia, he served as an offensive intern assisting with the running backs for the Cleveland Browns in 2015.
Young's first full-time coaching role at the Division I level came at the University of Colorado from 2013-14, tutoring the special teams and defensive side of the ball as the team's director of quality control. He spent the two prior seasons as a graduate assistant at San Jose State University, again working with the special teams in addition to handling the Spartans' quality control duties.
Prior to his arrival in San Jose, Young gained experience at both the Division II and junior college levels. In 2010 he served as the secondary coach and special teams coordinator at Minnesota State Moorhead University and in 2009 he was the receivers coach at De Anza (Calif.) College.
Young gained scouting experience during the 2007-08 seasons working as an intern in the player personnel departments for the Oakland Raiders and San Jose SaberCats of the Arena Football League.
While completing his undergraduate degree at Savannah State University, he worked as a student assistant and video coordinator for the football program, essentially starting his coaching career path in 2004. Young first attended Willamette University in Salem, Ore., where he played defensive back for two years. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in history from Savannah State University in 2005 and earned his master's in sport management from the University of San Francisco in 2008.
Young is married to the former Noel McCargar.
