How has Campbell fared in camp?

Wondering about a player, a past game or another issue involving the Bears? Senior writer Larry Mayer answers a variety of email questions from fans on ChicagoBears.com.

I've been hearing a whole lot about how well Jay Cutler has been performing in training camp, but not really anything regarding Jason Campbell. How has he looked so far?

Gary T.
Midlothian, Illinois

I'd say that Jason Campbell has had an excellent camp to this point. I don't recall seeing him throw a single interception in 7-on-7 or 11-on-11 drills in the first four practices. He has a very smooth delivery and throws an extremely catchable ball. Campbell had a particularly impressive stretch in a red zone drill in Sunday's practice. He showed great touch in dropping a pass between two defenders to rookie tight end Evan Rodriguez for a touchdown and also connected in the end zone with Dane Sanzenbacher, Eric Weems and Alshon Jeffery over cornerback Isaiah Frey.

The Bears look very young and injury prone at the safety position. Do you think they will bring in a veteran safety for some experience and leadership?

Glenn M.
Crestview, Florida

General manager Phil Emery is always looking to upgrade the Bears roster at every position. But it's very difficult to add quality veterans at this point of the year because most players who are capable of contributing in the NFL are already in camp with a team, especially since the NFL has expanded camp rosters from 80 to 90. Yes, the Bears are young at safety and have had injury issues. But they are confident they have depth and talent with starters Chris Conte and Major Wright and reserves Craig Steltz and Brandon Hardin. All are capable of contributing and helping to solidify the secondary.

The Broncos are making a big deal about having a record-breaking crowd at training camp with just over 4,000 fans. How many fans come out to see the Bears practice?

Dave R.
Monument, Colorado

It's certainly not unusual for more than 4,000 fans to come out and watch the Bears practice at Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais. And that number is often considerably more on weekends. On Saturday night, for example, an overflow crowd of more than 12,000 attended the first padded workout.
