Chalk Talk: Will Bears consider drafting a receiver?

Wondering about a player, a past game or another issue involving the Bears? Senior writer Larry Mayer answers a variety of questions from fans on ChicagoBears.com.

I'd love for the Bears to spend one of their two second-round picks on a receiver. Do you think that's something they'll think about doing?
Edward G.
Morton Grove, Illinois

Listening to general manager Ryan Poles speak at the NFL owners meetings this week, it sounded like selecting a receiver in the second round is something the Bears will consider. But he also indicated that the team would continue to look to the free agent market to possibly bolster the position. Asked about drafting a receiver in the second round, Poles said: "I would love to address it on Day 2 (second and third rounds), but we're also going to monitor the guys that are left in free agency. It's funny because there's a lot of [outside] panic like, 'You need receivers.' I think Davante [Adams] was taken in the second, right? So, there's talent there. It's not always going to be like that. I get it. And we're going to be patient. If it's not there, we're not going to do it and force it either. And this class is pretty deep, so I feel comfortable."

It's too bad that Larry Ogunjobi failed his physical and wasn't signed by the Bears. As far as I know, he's still available in free agency, so is there a chance that the Bears could sign him once he's healthy?
Reginald T.
Chicago

The Bears have not closed the door on eventually adding free agent defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi. Asked Monday at the NFL owners meetings about the possibility of signing Ogunjobi once he fully recovers from the foot injury he sustained in last season's playoffs, Poles said: "I would say we are open to that. We haven't crossed that bridge yet, but it's a conversation I would like to have."

I was disappointed that the Bills matched the offer sheet that offensive lineman Ryan Bates signed with the Bears last week. Do you think the Bears will continue to look to address the offensive line?
Bill P.
Waukesha, Wisconsin

The offensive line has been an area that Poles has focused on since being hired as Bears general manager, and I don't expect that to change anytime soon. After learning that the Bills had matched the offer that Bates signed with the Bears Monday, Poles candidly told reporters at the NFL owners meetings: "I just found that out. It stinks. But that's part of the RFA (restricted free agent) process. So we'll adjust and we'll keep adding players … There's always work to be done. So, we're going to keep at it. We've been in conversations with other people that are still out there, too. There's always work to be done, especially up front, so we'll keep at it."
