Who will compete at offensive tackle?

Wondering about a player, a past game or another issue involving the Bears? Senior writer Larry Mayer answers a variety of email questions from fans on ChicagoBears.com.

It seems like the Bears have a glut of guards and centers but don't have a whole lot of depth at tackle. Assuming that Kyle Long moves to guard and Charles Leno Jr. Jr. and Bobby Massie are the starters at tackle, who will compete for the swing spot?

Alan M.
Aurora, Illinois

One name general manager Ryan Pace mentioned before the draft when asked about possible competition at left tackle for Charles Leno Jr. was Nick Becton, a third-year pro who joined the Bears last Oct. 6 and appeared in five games, all as a reserve. Other possibilities include second-year pros Jason Weaver and Tayo Fabuluje, a 2015 sixth-round draft pick. The Bears could also move one of their experienced guards outside in the event of an injury to an interior player.

With all the moving the Bears did in the draft, how many picks do they have next year? It was hard to keep up with during the draft.

Joe
Missouri

At this point, the Bears have seven picks in next year's draft. They acquired an extra fourth-round pick when they traded down in the second round this year before choosing Kansas State guard Cody Whitehair. And they're missing their sixth-round selection after trading it to the Houston Texans last summer in exchange for tight end Khari Lee.

Some pundits are claiming that Deiondre' Hall is too slow to play cornerback. Do the Bears see him as a cornerback or safety?

Hunlock Creek, Pa.

The Bears like acquiring players with position flexibility, and that's certainly the case with fourth-round pick Deiondre' Hall. After selecting him in the draft, general manager Ryan Pace called Hall "an extremely versatile player" who is capable of playing cornerback, nickel back and safety. I would imagine that Hall will get reps at multiple positions throughout the offseason program (as the Bears do with several of their players) to see where the rookie fits best.
