The Chicago Bears announced that defensive back and special teams standout Josh Blackwell has been named the team's nominee for the 2026 Salute to Service Award presented by USAA. The annual award recognizes NFL players, coaches, staff and alumni who demonstrate an exceptional commitment to supporting U.S. service members, veterans and their families.
Blackwell's nomination highlights his involvement in the Bears' annual visits to Naval Station Great Lakes in partnership with USAA. Located approximately 35 miles north of Chicago, Naval Station Great Lakes is the U.S. Navy's largest training installation and home to its only boot camp. Over the past two years, Blackwell has joined teammates in touring the base, learning about the experiences of military personnel and spending time with recruits undergoing training.
During these visits, Blackwell has shared his personal journey to the NFL, offering insight into the challenges and setbacks he has overcome throughout his career. By relating his experiences to the discipline and perseverance required during boot camp, he has encouraged recruits to remain focused and resilient as they prepare for military service.
Beyond his visits to Naval Station Great Lakes, Blackwell has participated in various Bears community events throughout the season, connecting with fans and families through autograph signings, photos and personal conversations. Even when greeted by large crowds, he makes an effort to give each individual his attention, creating meaningful experiences and demonstrating his commitment to making a positive impact beyond the field.
Fans can support Blackwell by voting at NFL.com/SaluteFanVote through Monday, Nov. 30, 2026, at 10:59 p.m. CT. Fans are permitted to cast one vote per nominee per day. Fan voting will help determine the award's three finalists, who will be announced in January 2027. The award recipient will be recognized at NFL Honors, the league's annual primetime awards special, during the week of Super Bowl LXI in Los Angeles.
As the award's presenting sponsor, USAA will contribute $25,000 in the recipient's name to official aid societies representing all U.S. military branches. The NFL Foundation will match the contribution with an additional $25,000 donation to the recipient's military nonprofit charity of choice.
Through Salute to Service, USAA, the NFL and its 32 clubs honor, empower and connect with service members, veterans and their families year-round. During Weeks 9–11 of the regular season, clubs will recognize the military community through on-field branding, military appreciation activities and other game day events.
