Wondering about a player, a past game or another issue involving the Bears? Senior writer Larry Mayer answers a variety of email questions from fans on ChicagoBears.com.
I know Jordan Howard is only a rookie, but I can't recall another fifth-round draft pick who has made as much of an impact with the Bears. Is he already the team's best ever fifth-round pick?
I'd say that Jordan Howard is already among the top fifth-round selections in Bears history, but the best no doubt remains guard Stan Jones, who was voted into the Hall of Fame after being selected to seven straight Pro Bowls during 12 seasons with the Bears from 1954-65. One of Jones' teammates on the 1963 championship team, defensive tackle Fred Williams, was a fifth-round pick who was voted to four straight Pro Bowls. Other notable Bears fifth-round picks include Pro Bowl special-teamers Jerry Azumah, Corey Graham and Johnny Knox.
Why did the Bears decide to bring Kyle Fuller back off injured reserve and not Kevin White? I think White needs the game action in terms of his development more than Fuller.
The Bears designated Kyle Fuller to return from injured reserve because he has recovered from his arthroscopic knee surgery and is ready to practice, while Kevin White still needs time to come back from the fractured fibula he sustained in a Week 4 win over the Lions. So the decision was all about health and not which player would benefit more from playing time late in the season.
John Timu replaced Danny Trevathan last week after Trevathan was injured against the Titans. Will Timu continue to man that spot now that Trevathan is out for the rest of the season?
With Trevathan joining the suspended Jerrell Freeman on the sideline, Bears defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said Wednesday that the Bears "probably" would start Nick Kwiatkoski and John Timu at inside linebacker while also "rolling the other guys in there a little bit." So I assume that means we could also see Christian Jones and Jonathan Anderson at times as well.
