I've been learning a lot about special teams from guys like (Daniel) Hardy and (Jack) Sanborn and then Stephen (Carlson) and Niko (Nikola Kalinic), who are in the tight end room with me. They've been helping me out on kickoff return and punt return, specifically, because there's some more technique involved in what we're doing, and I've been a little bit slower to pick all of that up. It's a really good receptive culture within that group, and we're all trying to make each other better.
It's also been cool to see how involved coach Ben is with special teams. Whenever we have a special teams period in practice, he's standing in the middle watching and evaluating. I feel like special teams in general aren't always taken as seriously as they should be, but here we do a great job of emphasizing their importance, and I think it shows. Special teams was definitely a highlight last season and was a reason for winning games, so we're really looking to make that the case again this year.
We're heading back on the road this week, this time to Nashville to have a joint practice and our final preseason game against the Titans. My family and I moved to Green Hills, a suburb of Nashville, before my senior year of high school, and my parents still live there. I think they're going to come out to the joint practice and hopefully I'll have some time to see them afterward.
I also reached out to my high school coach, Trent Dilfer, who left for a couple of years to coach in college but is back at Lipscomb Academy, and was able to get him and some of his players tickets to the game. Even just being coached by him my senior year, he made a big impact on me and my game, so I'm excited to see him as well.
All I'm focusing on at this point in camp is continuing to get better day by day. Obviously it's not linear — there's ups and downs — but if I'm trending upward, I'll be happy with the way I'm progressing, and that can only help the team in the long run. I'm really excited for another opportunity to do that this weekend, both at the joint practice and in our final preseason game.
