Ben Johnson lauds Caleb Williams for QB's intensity, focus

Bears coach Ben Johnson praised Caleb Williams Tuesday for how seriously the third-year quarterback approaches his job.

“He’s taking a lot of pride in his approach right now and it trickles down to everyone around him.” Ben Johnson on Caleb Williams

"I've seen a very composed person every time he steps into the building," Johnson said. "I think his teammates feel that as well. He's getting to the practice field early. He's making sure his part is taken care of. He's warmed up, he's ready to go. He stays after with the guys, after practice … on a regular basis. He's taking a lot of pride in his approach right now, and it trickles down to everyone around him. I think it's a great thing. He continues to grow up, and he's going to be a huge leader for us this year."

Williams' intensity and focus are evident to Johnson in every practice.

"When we step on the grass, you can see that he's locked in," said the Bears coach. "He's got his blinders on, and he's only concerned about doing his job at a high level. He's serious about his approach, his job and making sure he's taking his game to the next level."

Williams is a more vocal leader than he was in either of his first two NFL seasons.

"He's getting to the point now when things aren't right, he gets pissed off, which I think is what the best ones do," Johnson said. "He's really hard on himself, first and foremost, and so he gets upset with himself. But now it's to the point where if we're that close and somebody didn't get his depth or ran the wrong number of steps or whatever that is, he's not afraid to let them know. And I think he's earned that right with how he has played over the last year and a half."

Johnson agreed with general manager Ryan Poles' assertion about Williams earlier in the day that "you see that joy back in his game where he's playing free."

"He's 100% right," Johnson said. "There's an excitement with him when he plays football, and I felt that from the first day I was in the building. He loves this game. He wants to be great. We know that. And then now he's getting to the point where that excitement is really radiating outside, and the people around him feel that. I think that also goes with the comfort level. He knows what he's doing. He's executing at a much higher clip than he ever has, and I think it's going to continue to grow. He's going to continue to elevate everyone around him, coaches included."

Mr. Consistency

Johnson was impressed with what he saw in training camp from receiver Rome Odunze, who showed no ill effects from the foot injury that hampered him last season.

"Mr. Consistency," Johnson said. "I know the dialogue about his foot and all that, and yet you didn't see any setback from that regard. I thought he looked completely healthy. I showed a highlight of him to the team just the other day, cracking one of the safeties in the joint practice. That inspires me to not want to get him the football, but I need to get him the football when I see things like that. He's doing all the little things, the things that maybe other people don't notice and the coaching staff is very appreciative of because it's going to help us win games. He's going to be a key cog in what we do."

The week ahead

The Bears will practice Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday before giving players Friday through Sunday off. They focused on special teams Tuesday and will concentrate on situational work Wednesday that they have generally only covered in walk-through sessions this summer.

"I look back to Week 1 last year, we had a number of situational plays pop up in that game that we didn't execute at a high enough level," Johnson said, referencing a loss to the Vikings at Soldier Field. "So, we're going to make sure we don't fall in that same trap again this year."

The Bears will conclude their work week with a padded practice Thursday.

"The guys that did not play in the preseason game against Tennessee there, they were in pads [last] Thursday, they won't be in pads again until next Tuesday," Johnson said. "So, that's why that Thursday practice will be so critical as to making sure everything we've built up to this point — stamina, endurance, pad level, fundamentals, technique — that we don't lose that as they get some time off this weekend."

Injury update

Johnson said that running back Kyle Monangai (knee) is week-to-week, while cornerbacks Jaylon Johnson and Tyrique Stevenson are "more day-to-day" with injuries they sustained in last Thursday's joint practice with the Titans.

Receiver Luther Burden III participated in Tuesday's workout.
