Chalk Talk: How many first-round picks are on Bears roster?

Wondering about a player, a past game or another issue involving the Bears? Senior writer Larry Mayer answers a variety of questions from fans on ChicagoBears.com.

It seems like the Bears like to sign players who have been selected in the first round of the draft. How many first-round picks are on their roster?
Donald P.
Oak Forest, Illinois

The Bears have eight first-round draft picks on their 53-man roster. Interestingly, that includes all four linebackers who are listed as starters on their depth chart: Inside linebackers Roquan Smith and Alec Ogletree and outside linebackers Khalil Mack and Robert Quinn. Six of the eight first-round picks were acquired by the Bears after being drafted by other teams: Quinn (14th by the Rams in 2011), Ogletree (30th by the Rams in 2013), Mack (5th by the Raiders in 2014), receiver Breshad Perriman (26th by the Ravens in 2015), cornerback Artie Burns (25th by the Steelers in 2016) and tackle Germain Ifedi (31st by the Seahawks in 2016). The two first-round picks chosen by the Bears are Smith (8th in 2018) and quarterback Justin Fields (11th in 2021). They dealt their first-round choices in 2019 and 2020 to the Raiders as part of the Mack trade.

Do you think that left tackle Jason Peters will be able to play the entire game against the Rams or do the Bears plan on subbing in someone else?
John S.
Schaumburg, Illinois

Both coach Matt Nagy and offensive line coach Juan Castillo expressed optimism Monday that Jason Peters will be able to play the entire season opener. But they will keep a close eye on how he's doing during the game and are prepared to sub him in replacement if the 18th-year pro needs a break. Here's what Nagy had to say about Peters: "I feel pretty good right now with him. I think he's in a good place. Just talking with him and talking with coach Juan, his level of conditioning we feel is good. It might just be something when we get into the game [where] we'll just see how he's feeling. We'll plan on going into it with him as the guy. He's played a lot of games and he understands that football game conditioning and we're going to have to rely on him a lot as we go through it."

Will the Bears release a uniform schedule before the season starts?
Bill S.
Bradenton, Florida

Yes, I believe the Bears will announce their uniform schedule for the entire season sometime later this week. I'm sure we'll have that news on ChicagoBears.com and the team's social platforms as soon as it's released.
