Bears starters to play in preseason game vs. Bills

Caleb Williams Bears Bulletin 8.13.25 16x9 - 1W

Bears coach Ben Johnson revealed Wednesday that quarterback Caleb Williams and the rest of the team's starters will play in Sunday night's preseason game against the Bills at Soldier Field.

Williams and most of the other starters did not play in last Sunday's preseason opener versus the Dolphins, which enabled them to work out on the field before the game and practice on Monday, the day after the contest.

"Last week and really all through camp I've been pretty consistent with the thought of reps, reps, reps are the most important thing to get him up to speed," Johnson said of Williams. "And by the plan that we had a week ago, we were able to get him probably somewhere between 80 and 100 more reps than we would have been able to had he played in the game.

"This week's it's a different schedule, different length of time between games and all that. Our plan right now is the guys that sat out last week, they will be playing this week."

Johnson isn't expected to decide how much Williams will play Sunday night until after Friday's joint practice with the Bills at Halas Hall.

"To be determined," he said. "We'll talk about that. We'll see how the joint practice goes and reassess. There are things that you kind of have in the back of your head when you make the plan for training camp and as you go through training camp, things change. And that's what we do, we adjust.

"We like to say upstairs, 'No one adjusts better than us.' I think our players understand that, and so what we do as coaches is we … get the numbers from sports science, whatever we need to do, what's best for the team, what's best for each individual player, that's how we determine that."
