While injuries are impacting quarterbacks Caleb Williams and Tyson Bagent, there was positive health-related news Wednesday at Halas Hall.
Left tackle Ozzy Trapilo continued to work out without restrictions, and the Bears opened the 21-day practice window for two players on their physically unable to perform (PUP) list: defensive lineman Shemar Turner and linebacker Noah Sewell.
Trapilo sustained a knee injury in last season's playoff win over the Packers that was expected to sideline him for most, if not all, of the 2026 campaign. But the 2025 second-round pick from Boston College returned to practice Aug. 16 and was a full participant for the first time last Friday.
"We'll keep working him through these team drills," Johnson said. "That's where these padded practices are so invaluable for us; not just for Ozzy, but [for] the guys coming off the PUP, just maximize their ability to get in football shape the best that we can.
"It's something we look at at the end of each week, just all of Ozzy's reps over the course of the week—what do they look like—and continue to coach him up and get improvement as we go through it. I think he still is gaining confidence in just being able to put all of his weight in it and being a powerful player and yet, in some ways, he's a little bit more flexible and fluid than he was before, which is amazing. It's a credit to him and those guys that have been working with him. It's just a matter of time now before we feel like he's ready for a game."
While Trapilo continues to ramp up, veteran Braxton Jones has started each of the Bears' first two games at left tackle. Last Sunday, he alternated with Theo Benedet, playing 55 snaps to Benedet's 19.
"Braxton's been pretty good," Johnson said. "I think he's done a nice job. We talked about platooning him just a little bit there with Theo, just to keep him fresh late in games. I think he strains, he finishes; his understanding of the run game has served him well. I think that he's done a nice job for two weeks in."
Familiar face
The Bears will have a new long snapper Monday night against the Eagles. On Tuesday, they signed veteran Scott Daly off the Saints practice squad and waived undrafted rookie Beau Gardner.
Daly, a Chicago-area native who grew up in Downers Grove, returns after serving as the Bears' long snapper in all 17 games each of the past two seasons.
"Scott's a dependable, reliable piece," Johnson said. "He loved being here. When you have a young long snapper, there sometimes are some growing pains, and we're experiencing those. We just felt like it was the right thing to do for our team at that time."
Daly spent the offseason with the Buccaneers, was on the Packers practice squad from Sept. 2-14 and joined the Saints practice squad Sept. 18. He was activated and played last Sunday in New Orleans' 24-17 win over the Ravens in Baltimore.
"It's been quite the whirlwind to say the least," Daly said, "but I'm just so grateful, so thankful to be back here. Never thought in my journey that I would be able to play here, let alone be back here."
Daly hopes to remain with the Bears the entire season, but he's taking a much shorter-term view.
"That's the goal, but I'm just taking it one day at a time," he said. "I've always had a one-day contract mindset. That's the best way to take this approach, but again, so thankful, so grateful to see so many familiar faces. Guys have welcomed me back with open arms: coaches, staff and players."
Injury update
Because the Bears play Monday night, the first official injury report of the week comes out Thursday instead of Wednesday.
Johnson did reveal, however, that cornerback Tyrique Stevenson is week-to-week with a hamstring injury he sustained against the Vikings.
The Bears were back on the practice fields at Halas Hall Wednesday afternoon to continue preparing for their Monday night matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles at Soldier Field.
