They Said It: Week 1

In the aftermath of the Bears' 27-23 win over the Lions, here's what writers around the country are saying about the team.

"Chicago was the beneficiary of rookie Lions back D'Andre Swift dropping the potential winning touchdown pass in the final seconds, but no one was raining on [Mitchell] Trubisky's parade Sunday night. A rally like this one, and a strike like the winning throw to [Anthony] Miller, was, for one building-block week, something the Bears needed desperately. Nagy needed it too. He's joined at the hip with Trubisky, and was when he made the starting call 10 days ago."

"The neglected running game came to life. The offensive line showed a step in the right direction. And wide receiver Anthony Miller again performed late-game heroics in Detroit — all reasons for the Bears to feel like they escaped an empty Ford Field on Sunday afternoon with a handful of positive signs after a 27-23 cliffhanger of a victory over the Lions.

"The Bears should feel good about some of the developments after the unusual season kicked off amid the COVID-19 pandemic."

"The Bears committed to the run. The triumvirate of David Montgomery, Tarik Cohen and Cordarrelle Patterson kept the Lions' defense (mostly) off-balance. Head coach Matt Nagy called for the run and stuck with it. Trubisky helped his own cause and scrambled late for a couple of nice gains. The rediscovery of the rushing attack is a positive sign."

"Things looked easy for Matthew Stafford and Adrian Peterson, and the Bears lacked a game-wrecking play on defense. But don't sleep on this moment: [Akiem] Hicks sacked Stafford in the fourth quarter, pushing a Matt Prater field goal attempt back to 55 yards. Prater doinked it off the right upright, giving Trubisky a short field – which he turned into a touchdown in barely over a minute.

"And then, finally, the game-shifting play happened when Kyle Fuller picked off a tipped, floating pass from Stafford. Trubisky turned that one into the game-winning score."

"You can always say these things about Nagy's Bears: they do stick together and, for the most part, play games through the end. Sunday was just another example. The Bears' odds of victory entering the fourth quarter were minimal.

"An empty stadium and all the wrinkles of pandemic football certainly added some weirdness. It's easy to see why this victory carried extra meaning for Nagy's Bears. Veteran tight end Jimmy Graham felt it in the 154th regular-season game of his career."

"It was almost the opposite of the 2018 season opener, when the Bears were dominant in the first half against the Packers at Lambeau Field, but wilted in the second half. Fuller had a chance to seal it late in the game, but dropped an interception that was even more of a sure thing than Swift's drop. The Bears set themselves up to get beaten by Aaron Rodgers and indeed they were.

"This time, Fuller made the catch to give the Bears a chance to win — and it was the Lions who dropped the ball. It's still better to be good than lucky in the NFL. But teams like the Bears need to be both."
