Wednesday weigh-in: Bears prep for Packers

defense_ww_121218

The Bears (9-4) can clinch their first NFC North championship since 2010 Sunday with a win over the rival Packers (5-7-1) at Soldier Field or a loss by the Vikings (6-6-1) to the Dolphins (7-6) in Minnesota.

The Bears enter Week 15 with a two-and-a-half game lead atop the division over the Vikings, meaning that they will secure the NFC North crown with a win or Minnesota loss at any point over the final three weeks of the season.

A Bears win Sunday would also eliminate the Packers from the playoff race. Green Bay remains alive for a wildcard berth but can no longer win the division. The Packers have lost five of seven games since a 3-2-1 start.

Asked what it would mean for the Bears to clinch their division with a win over the Packers Sunday at Soldier Field, receiver Anthony Miller said: "It would mean a lot. It's something that this city hasn't seen for a while and we're just bringing that back, bringing that winning mentality back, and the train is not going to stop rolling."

Home sweet home

The Bears improved to 6-1 at Soldier Field this season with last Sunday night's impressive 15-6 win over the Rams. But they've lost eight straight home games to the Packers, a streak that began with the 2010 NFC Championship Game. The Bears' last win over Green Bay at Soldier Field came on Sept. 27, 2010 by a score of 20-17. The Bears have won six home games this year for the first time since they went 6-2 in 2008. A seventh victory Sunday would mark the first time that occurred since they were 7-1 in 2005.

Top priority

The Bears will look to contain Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers on Sunday. The two-time NFL MVP has won 14 of the last 15 games he's started and finished against the Bears. He has thrown for 24 touchdowns and just one interception in his last eight starts versus the Bears, including 10 TDs and no interceptions in his last four games.

Numbers game

The Bears enter Week 15 tied for 22nd in the NFL on offense (13th rushing and 23rd passing) and 3rd on defense (2nd against the run and 10th versus the pass. The Packers rank 11th on offense (19th rushing and 10th passing) and 16th on defense (24th against the run and 8th versus the pass).

Talk show

Bears coach Matt Nagy will address the media Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, quarterback Mitchell Trubisky spoke Wednesday, and offensive coordinator Mark Helfrich, defensive coordinator Vic Fangio and special-teams coordinator Chris Tabor will talk Thursday.

Series history

The Bears trail 97-94-6 and have lost 15 of the last 17. The Bears' largest lead in the series was 25 games in 1992 (81-56). But since that point, the Packers have won 41 of 54 matchups. The Bears lost the last meeting 24-23 on Sept. 9, 2018 in Green Bay. Rodgers rallied the Packers from a 20-0 second-half deficit by throwing three touchdown passes in the fourth quarter.
