Dave McGinnis, who served as Bears linebackers coach from 1986-95 as part of a 44-year coaching career, passed away Monday in Tennessee at age 74.
Known affectionately as "Coach Mac," McGinnis joined the Bears the year that Vince Tobin replaced Buddy Ryan as defensive coordinator under Mike Ditka. McGinnis coached Hall of Famer Mike Singletary as well as Otis Wilson and Wilber Marshall, among others, and helped the Bears win four NFC Central titles.
"Dave was a man of principle and unquestioned integrity, and a darn good football coach," said Bears chairman George H. McCaskey. "Those of us who were fortunate to be around him knew that any time spent with Coach Mac was going to be a good time. We will miss him. Our condolences to his family."
McGinnis grew up in Texas and played defensive back at TCU. He began his coaching career at his alma mater in 1973 as a graduate assistant. After 13 years at the collegiate level, he entered the NFL with the Bears, working under Ditka (1986-92) and Dave Wannstedt (1993-95).
McGinnis became Cardinals defensive coordinator in 1996 under Tobin. The Texas native served in that role until midway through the 2000 season when he was elevated to interim head coach after Tobin was relieved of his duties. McGinnis remained Arizona's head coach through the 2003 season.
McGinnis spent the next eight seasons as Titans linebackers coach—the first seven under Jeff Fisher. The two reunited with the Rams, with McGinnis serving as assistant head coach on Fisher's staff from 2012-16.
After leaving coaching, McGinnis spent the last nine seasons as a popular radio color analyst for the Titans.
