The school won the visit through the 2013 Illinois National Guard Player Appearance Sweepstakes, and used it to congratulate students and teachers for raising $100,000 for the St. Baldrick's Foundation!

Slauson visited with over 30 students who raised more than $1,000 each, and cheered them on as they had their heads shaved in front of the entire school. He was also a special guest at a school-wide assembly, and spoke to the students about dealing with adversity, the importance of teamwork, and giving back to the community.

The St. Baldrick's Foundation is a volunteer-driven charity committed to funding the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long, healthy lives.

Each spring, St. Baldrick's hosts head-shaving events across the country to raise money for their cause. These events began as a challenge between businessmen and have grown from one event in 2000 to over 1,300 events in 2012, raising critical funds for childhood cancer research.

Events take place in restaurants, schools, churches, parks, malls, military bases, firehouses and any other place you can imagine.
