Bears quarterback and Madden NFL 27 cover athlete Caleb Williams was honored Thursday night at the EA SPORTS Opening Drive Madden and College Football 27 Reveal Event inside Chicago's Navy Pier.

The NFL and gaming communities gathered at the EA SPORTS Opening Drive Madden and College Football 27 Reveal Event. Williams is the first Bears player to appear on the Madden cover, though guard Roberto Garza was on the cover of Madden NFL 09 en Español.

"It's a childhood dream," Williams said. "It's really cool to be able to be on such a historic game and have such a historic moment but also do it for the first time with such a historic organization that I'm with. I'm really excited and really grateful and hopefully can be on this cover at some point again."

Williams was chosen for the cover after leading the 2025 Bears to the NFC North championship and a scintillating playoff win over the Packers. He was at his best in crunch time, repeatedly displaying his clutch gene in rallying the Bears to seven victories in games they trailed in the final 2:00.

"It's awesome," said Bears receiver Rome Odunze, who attended Thursday night's event. "He had a tremendous year. He deserves the cover. The way he played and the excitement that he brought to the game week-in and week-out was very cool."

Williams is featured on the Madden cover in the pose he struck while completing a crucial 27-yard pass to Odunze in the playoff win over Green Bay. Trailing 27-16 with just over five minutes remaining and the Bears facing fourth-and-8 from their own 43, Williams was flushed out of the pocket to the left, leaped in the air and lofted a perfect pass to Odunze in traffic, sustaining the drive.

After the Bears completed their biggest postseason comeback in franchise history, the iconic play went viral on social media, with fans and media comparing the silhouette of Williams throwing back across his body while in the air to Nike's famous Jumpman logo featuring Michael Jordan.

When EA SPORTS suggested that Williams' version of the Jumpman be featured on the Madden cover, the Bears quarterback loved the idea.

"That's the position I want to be in, but I also wanted to pay respect to [Jordan]," Williams said. "That's more of what it was. It was more of a respect thing, bringing retro back, not letting people forget that and doing it on my side of the world of football. So paying respect to that and him and what he was able to do in Chicago, I wanted to bring that energy, that vibe back. And I think we're on a track to do that and we've got to keep winning games."

Former NFL receiver Chad Ochocinco, who attended the EA SPORTS event, loves the Jumpman cover photo of Williams soaring in front of the Chicago skyline.

"It's dope," Ochocinco said. "It exemplifies him and what he stands for. I'm happy that he made the cover. As a child growing up playing video games, being in the game is one thing, but being able to don the cover of Madden, that's iconic."

Williams has had lofty goals since childhood. His dreams included winning the Heisman Trophy, being the No. 1 overall pick in the draft, appearing on the Madden cover and winning multiple Super Bowls. Landing the Madden cover has enabled him to achieve the first three of those objectives.

"It fits in perfectly," Williams said. "It's a part of it. It's another stepping stone for me, it's another thing to tell me to keep going and keep striving for these goals."

At Thursday night's event, the trailer for Madden NFL 27 was shown for the first time. It stars actor, Chicago area native and Bears fan Vince Vaughn. In addition, content creators and streamers were able to play the video game, which is scheduled to be released Aug. 13.

One streamer on hand was Sketch, a Houston native who has one million followers on Twitch and YouTube.

"To see Caleb Williams was awesome; that's my boy," said Sketch, whose real name is Kylie Cox. "It was really cool to see him get drafted with Rome. To watch them from Year 1 to Year 2 and really see them prosper, I think they're destined for greatness. It's the right group with the right guys."

In addition to interacting with the dozens of streamers and content creators in attendance at various stations throughout Navy Pier, including personalities from ESPN, Barstool Sports and other outlets, Williams appeared on former NFL quarterback Cam Newton's podcast alongside Odunze. Williams' parents were also on hand, as was Bears mascot Staley Da Bear.

Williams' style of play earned him the Madden cover as much as anything.

"It's unique, it's exciting, it's electric," former Bears running back Matt Forte said at Thursday night's event. "I've never seen a quarterback do some of the things that he does out there on the field. It can't be taught, it can't be coached, but it's in him … To have a quarterback that is of this caliber is something that's special. I'm just super excited and grateful that we have a guy that can really take charge and be a franchise quarterback."

"He's unpredictable and that's what's exciting about him," Ochocinco said. "He's hard to game plan for because you don't know what's going to happen. He's a dual-threat quarterback. He can throw with all different arm slots, different angles, and he probably has the best offensive play caller in Ben Johnson. His creativity and what he brought from Detroit here, it showed last year. Having a coach like that, that can maximize Caleb's potential, Chicago Bears fans are probably set for the next 10-15 years."
