Injury Update: Bears CB Jaylon Johnson questionable for opener

Jaylon Johnson Injury Update 2025 Week 1 16x9 - 1O

Bears Pro Bowl cornerback Jaylon Johnson (calf, groin) was limited in practice Saturday for the third straight day and is listed as questionable for Monday night's opener against the Vikings at Soldier Field.

Linebacker T.J. Edwards (hamstring) did not practice all week and is doubtful on the injury report. Edwards has started all 17 games each of the past three seasons, one with the Eagles and the last two with the Bears.

With Edwards not expected to suit up, rookie fourth-round pick Ruben Hyppolite II could see expanded playing time versus Minnesota.

"He has really come into his own," said coach Ben Johnson. "He is really smart. He takes it seriously. Really athletic. D.A. (defensive coordinator Dennis Allen) and that side of the ball, they've really grown to think he is someone we can depend on even though we're going to have the bright lights of Monday Night Football on us. I'd anticipate him on the field there on defense. He's got to be a playmaker for us on special teams. And I think we're going to continue to see that player ascend."

Hyppolite is unfazed about making his NFL debut in a national spotlight on Monday Night Football.

"It's a great opportunity," he said. "First NFL game, so a lot of excitement. I'm just ready to go out there and handle my business, do my job, and just help the team win. At the end of the day, that's what it's about."

There was good news on the injury front in the backfield Saturday. Rookie running back Kyle Monangai (hamstring) practiced without restrictions after being limited Friday and was not given an injury designation, meaning he is expected to play Monday night. Running back Roschon Johnson (foot) was limited Saturday after sitting out Friday and is questionable.

"Monangai has really hit his stride there over the course of the spring and in camp," Johnson said. "I trust that guy at this point, which is a big thing to say for a young guy like that. He tends to do everything right."

In other injury news, defensive back and special teams standout Josh Blackwell (groin) is questionable after being limited in practice for the second straight day.

For the Vikings, running back Zavier Scott (ankle) and defensive lineman Elijah Williams (hamstring) have been ruled out of Monday night's game. Safety Harrison Smith (illness) is doubtful. And defensive tackle Christian Darrisaw (knee) is questionable.
