D'Andre Swift was a full participant in Thursday's practice after being limited by a groin injury Wednesday that kept him out of last Sunday's win over the Bengals.
But the veteran running back missed Friday's workout due to an undisclosed personal issue and is questionable for Sunday's home game versus the Giants.
Rookie running back Kyle Monangai had a breakout performance in Swift's absence in Cincinnati—rushing for 176 yards on 26 carries—and will be ready if called upon to shoulder most of the workload again Sunday.
"Whatever I've got to do to help us win, that's really the main thing," Monangai said. "We try to go 1-0 each week, so if that's what I've got to do, that's what I've got to do. I've just got to be prepared for whatever comes my way."
Monangai was a full participant in practice Friday for the second straight day after being limited Wednesday due to an ankle injury. He was not given a designation on the injury report.
If Swift is unable to play, the Bears could also lean on third-year pro Roschon Johnson, who returned to action against the Bengals after missing the previous game in Baltimore with a back injury. Johnson practiced in full Friday after being limited Wednesday and Thursday and was not given an injury designation.
"I'm always ready; same approach, same mindset," Johnson said. "It doesn't matter if I'm up, down, whatever the case is, I'm always ready."
Four Bears players have been ruled out of Sunday's game: Linebacker T.J. Edwards (hand/hamstring), defensive end Dominique Robinson (ankle), defensive back Josh Blackwell (concussion) and receiver Jahdae Walker (concussion).
Coach Ben Johnson revealed Friday that Edwards underwent hand surgery but is not expected to be placed on injured reserve.
Tight end Durham Smythe (calf) returned to practice on a limited basis Friday after sitting out Wednesday and Thursday and is questionable for Sunday's game.
Other players who practiced in full Friday and were not given injury designations were receivers Rome Odunze (ankle/heel), DJ Moore (hip/groin) and Luther Burden III (concussion); tight end Cole Kmet (concussion); linebacker Amen Ogbongbemiga (knee) and safety Kevin Byard III (back/ankle).
