With Veterans Day on Wednesday, senior writer Larry Mayer ranks the 10 most memorable events held at Soldier Field since it opened in 1924 as a memorial to U.S. soldiers who have died in combat.

(10) Notre Dame takes down USC
Nov. 26, 1927
In front of an estimated 120,000 fans, one of the highest attended games in NCAA history, the Fighting Irish knocked off the Trojans 7-6 in what Notre Dame coach Knute Rockne said was the greatest game he ever saw.

(9) Blackhawks make first appearance
March 1, 2014
The Chicago Blackhawks beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-1 in front of a sold-out crowd of 62,921 fans as part of the NHL's Stadium Series.

(8) World Cup opening ceremonies
June 17, 1994
Soccer fans from around the world were watching when Soldier Field hosted the opening ceremonies for the 1994 World Cup tournament, the first time it was played in the United States.

(7) First Special Olympics Games
July 20, 1968
The first Special Olympics Games featured more than 1,000 people with intellectual disabilities from 26 U.S. states and Canada. The one-day event was held in conjunction with the Kennedy Foundation and the Chicago Park District. It's credited with helping to change the stigma of those affected by intellectual disabilities.

(6) King speaks at "I Have a Dream Rally"
June 21, 1964
Martin Luther King Jr. headlined an "I Have a Dream Rally" that celebrated the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which outlawed discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex and national origin. About 75,000 people attended the event, which also featured Notre Dame president Reverend Theodore Hesburgh.

(5) Roosevelt makes campaign appearance

President Franklin D. Roosevelt made the only Midwestern speaking appearance in his final re-election campaign before a boisterous crowd of more than 150,000—with just as many people outside the stadium unable to gain admittance. Roosevelt was re-elected 10 days later.

(4) Navy wins college football national title
Nov. 27, 1926
On the day Soldier Field was dedicated as a monument to American servicemen, undefeated Navy played one-loss Army for college football's national championship before more than 100,000 fans. The teams battled to a 21-21 tie, enabling Navy to claim the title.

(3) Bears claim NFC title over Saints
Jan. 21, 2007
The Bears advanced to Super Bowl XLI with a 39-14 victory over the New Orleans Saints in the 2006 NFC Championship Game. The Bears led 16-14 in the third quarter before scoring the final 23 points on a safety and three fourth-quarter touchdowns.

(2) Tunney retains heavyweight boxing title
Sept. 22, 1927
World heavyweight champion Gene Tunney won a unanimous decision over former champion Jack Dempsey. The boxing match was dubbed "The Long Count Fight" because when Tunney was knocked down in the seventh round, the count was delayed because Dempsey didn't go to a neutral corner. It was the first $2 million gate in entertainment history.

The Bears punched their ticket to Super Bowl XX with a 24-0 win over the Los Angeles Rams in the 1985 NFC title game. In the process, the Bears became the first NFL team to record back-to-back shutouts in the playoffs.
