The 6-3, 280-pounder broke the news on his Twitter account Tuesday evening, tweeting: "Thank you Chicago for the best five years of my life! I can't wait to begin the next chapter of my life ... with a star on my helmet."

Melton grew up near Dallas in Grapevine, Texas, and attended the University of Texas. Selected in the fourth round of the 2009 draft, Melton had a breakout year in his first season as a starter in 2011 when he recorded a career-high seven sacks.

Melton was then voted to his first Pro Bowl in 2012 after registering 33 tackles with six sacks, five tackles-for-loss, a team-high 24 quarterback pressures and two forced fumbles.

Melton was then plagued by injuries in 2013. He sat out a month after suffering a concussion in the preseason opener and then tore his ACL in a Week 3 win over the Steelers.

In Dallas, Melton will reunite with Cowboys defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli, who served as Melton's position coach with the Bears from 2009-12.
